The Sri Subramanya Kshetra temple is popularly known as Sooda and takes the name after the place which is synonymous with the temple. The temple is one of the most acclaimed and popular Lord Subramanya temple of South India. The name ‘Sooda’ is derived from the Tulu word ‘Chooda’ which is a head gear or hair bun also called ‘Soodi’ in Tulu. The temple dates back to the 11th century and Sage Bhargava was said to have established the main deity of the temple. Since then the Lord Karthikeya has been worshipped by Kings for generations.
The temple attracts devotees from all over South India and the country and abroad. On special occasions like Sashti and the Annual Car Festival devotees throng the temple to take darshan of Lord Subramanya also fondly addressed as Skanda. The temple is also a centre of cultural activities and also indulges in humanitarian and social service activities.
How to reach the temple :
Sooda is around 27 kms away from Udupi and around 49 kms from Mangalore and is in the Karkala Taluk today . It can be reached by air, train, bus and by road . The closest airport is the Mangalore International Airport and the closest railway station is the Udupi railway station.
